Wasatch 100

Join in on the 5(?)th annual UCARES participation in the (many) annual Wasatch 100 endurance run. Wasatch 100 is a foot race that begins in Layton and ends at the Homestead in Midway. The race begins early morning Saturday, September 10th. More information about the race can be found at www.wasatch100.com

UCARES provides first aid, communications, food, and water at the Rock Springs check point. Because this check point is not near a road, it has to be hiked to. The hike is about 1 1/2 mile and hikers gain about 2000 feet of elevation during the hike. Most gear and food can be packed in by horses but a back pack with lightweight personal items.

The Rock Springs check point receives its first runner at about 10:00 pm Saturday night. The last runner comes through around 2:00pm Sunday afternoon. The fastest runner finishes the race in around 20 hours. We try to leave the trailhead at 4:00 pm Saturday to have enough time to hike to the check point, cook dinner and get ready for the first runner. Breakfast and lunch are also provided.

This will be a multi-mode event using voice, packet, and APRS. UCARES uses packet radio to send runner in/out times to the race database. We will also use APRS this year to track horses and hikers to and from the check point area. There is a possibility of using SSTV this year as well.

There is also a need for hams at the trailhead to help run packet and other base camp operations. If you are interested in helping but unable to hike, you can still come and participate and learn about digital radio modes as they can be used in the field.
